I get most creative when I'm in a calm state of mind. As few distractions as possible is my key to long and effective working sessions. And whenever I need a reference picture for inspiration, I can keep it on my desk or hang it on the wall next to my screen. The clean surrounding makes it easier for me to feel exactly what it is that I need to learn/use from the reference picture.
My equipment is a Macbook Pro (17 inch screen), placed on a laptop cooler, an HP Laserjet P1005 black-&-white printer, a Brother DCP-385C scanner & color printer, a Wacom intuos 4 tablet Medium, a wireless optical mouse with a high quality mouse-pad, and an extra 21 inch screen connected to my MacBook. Most of the equipment is connected to my computer through a USB hub.
I also have external speakers for when I watch tutorials online or on CD-ROM. I can also use them in case I feel that I could get in the right mood for my work by listening to some particular music, but most of the time I prefer absolute silence when I work. That allows me to get fully absorbed in my work, to the extend that I forget time and space. I love that state of mind. It makes life worth living for me. That is another reason why I treat my workspace as a temple.
